The Wulanda Recreation and Convention Centre in Mount Gambier is a new $67m large-scale, multi-purpose facility designed to provide recreational and community services for people of all ages and abilities. From children and families to community groups, youth programmes, sports clubs and those with special needs, the centre serves as a key hub for the region.
However, the local mains water supply posed a significant challenge. The supply originates from the Blue Lake, which naturally contains high levels of calcium carbonate due to the limestone aquifer. This leads to elevated total hardness, which, left untreated, can cause limescale deposition. The build-up of limescale has the potential to affect valves, tapware, appliances and hot water systems across the facility, increasing both maintenance requirements and energy costs.

The City of Mount Gambier required a water treatment solution that would protect the entire Wulanda Recreation and Convention Centre. Given the scale of the facility and the diverse uses of water throughout the site, the solution needed to be robust, low-maintenance and capable of ensuring uninterrupted supply.
Puretec worked with the Hydraulic Engineering and Head Contractors to design a system that addressed both sediment and hardness issues.
Our proven “Discover, Design, Deploy, Deliver” methodology was initiated immediately. We developed a tailored solution and formalised the design and quote. Once approved, the project moved quickly with resources assigned, local Puretec Dealers engaged, and onsite installation supported.

Impurities such as sand, rust flakes, lime deposits and coarse material can damage water distribution lines and appliances including pipes, valves, and mixers. The installation of a protection filter is the simplest and most efficient way to safeguard against these issues.
The IAB65F filter provided effective sediment reduction down to 100 microns*, protecting infrastructure throughout the facility and reducing the risk of costly maintenance and repairs.

A Puretec twin alternating water softening system provides continuous soft water supply, effectively reducing calcium carbonate and the risk of limescale build-up across the facility.
This combination ensured protection for both equipment and infrastructure, while also maintaining water quality suitable for the wide range of uses within the centre.

The commercial treatment system was designed to be largely self-sufficient. The IAB65F incorporates inbuilt pressure monitoring with time-based backwashing. This enables the unit to automatically clean the screen and flush trapped contaminants to waste without manual input. The custom-programmed SOL380-2TA continually monitors water consumption and automatically regenerates as required. Its twin alternating vessels ensure a constant supply of softened water, with no interruption to the facility’s operations. This automation minimises the need for hands on servicing while guaranteeing long-term system reliability.
The installation has delivered a comprehensive solution for the Wulanda Recreation and Convention Centre. The facility is now protected from sediment, safeguarding fixtures and tapware across the site. With softened water supplied throughout the building, the risk of limescale deposition has been reduced as well.
This has lowered maintenance requirements, extended the lifespan of plumbing and appliances, and lowered energy costs due to improved system efficiency. The centre can operate with confidence that its water infrastructure is safeguarded, ensuring reliable service for the community it supports.
