Case Study - Dairy Farm, Southland New Zealand

THE WATER CHALLENGE

The two on-site bores that supply cattle drinking water and the dairy shed supply contain very high levels of iron, manganese and bacteria.

For a dairy farm, addressing these issues can:
• Increase milk production by preventing reduced water consumption by the cattle (Beede, 2006).
• Reduce maintenance costs due to fouling of pipes, failure of equipment (e.g. hot water cylinders) and excessive chemical use.
• Avoid penalties due to failed compliance testing (turbidity, bacteria, etc.).

APPLICATION

It is widely established that poor quality drinking water reduces herd consumption levels, resulting in a corresponding reduction in milk production and profitability.

THE SOLUTION

Puretec utilised the NTS Series and aeration for pH correction to facilitate iron and manganese removal with the IRX Series. Following final cartridge filtration, ultraviolet disinfection was selected to provide chemical-free, microbiologically safe water for use within the cow shed.

For this farm, Puretec’s treatment system is both chemical-free and salt-free, meaning:

• Less system maintenance
• Lower operating costs
• Best-in-class efficiency
